Top-Flight Updates: Mejbri Suspended for Spitting; City Boss Says 'Back Line Must Improve'

From the world of top-flight updates, a significant player has been issued a significant suspension, a head coach has singled out a player's errors to prove a point, and Pep Guardiola has demanded backline betterment after a chaotic victory.

Mejbri Given Four-Game Suspension and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri has been issued a four-game suspension and a financial penalty for misconduct during a recent fixture versus Leeds United. The governing body confirmed the player faced a separate regulatory commission following allegations of spitting towards away supporters at the 67th point of a 2-0 win by Burnley.

An FA release read: “An independent disciplinary panel has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri for misconduct in the top-flight match with Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that he behaved in breach of the rules of football and/or in a poor manner by engaging in abusive and unacceptable behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United fans.”

The statement added, “Mejbri subsequently accepted the charge, and the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-match suspension and £15,000 following a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for the sanction are to be released in due course.” Burnley, now 19th in the Premier League standings, travel to 12th-place Newcastle this Saturday.

Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Make a Point

The Blues' head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that a lack of seasoned players is not a problem for his club, highlighting that centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent him from playing a bad game during a 3-1 loss to Leeds United.

Maresca, who oversees the most youthful squad in the Premier League, rejected the idea that inexperience was a factor in their poor result. He presented his argument by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced player on the pitch, after he delivered a mistake-riddled display at the back.

“We always mention experience after we drop points,” Maresca said. “After we beat Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, no one was mentioning experienced personnel. I know that when we lose, we are constantly looking for the reason why, but in my view why we didn’t win to Leeds is not because of inexperience, it’s because we just weren't at our best.”

He added, “Who was the most senior player for us on the pitch? It was Tosin. Did he play any good? Therefore, it isn't related to his age. It’s about those 11 men, they were not up to standard.”

3. Guardiola Says Defence 'Has to Get Better'

The Manchester City manager has insisted his team have learnt from a recent thriller against Fulham and the game is now in the past. The team held on to claim a 5-4 win during a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with about an hour played.

This followed they resisted a fightback and won 3-2 in the previous game, it raised more questions about whether they possess the defensive steel required to sustain a challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable learnings, I hope. In the Premier League, for every team, you have to take onboard what happens performances and results and think of the next one.”

“Of course I’m concerned,” he admitted. “We try to understand the cause, so as not to concede the goals. After conceding three scored against Leeds, and five goals against Fulham you can see the two sides, correct? So, we have done plenty of positive things. Yet the number of attempts had Leeds have? Three? Scored two. It’s not good. How many attempts for Fulham ? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded we can see is high. We have to be better.”

Newcastle Focus on Defenders' Deals

The Magpies' recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has placed contract negotiations with key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda at St James’ Park. Wilson arrived from Nottingham Forest in October and was reassured to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a deal that runs until 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

That has left Wilson free to focus on negotiations for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal ending in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, Newcastle's efforts have assumed a certain urgency.

“The initial three or four days after starting was when I found that Sandro’s deal was significantly more secure than I had thought,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that the club would want to renew Tino’s deal and we would want to extend Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are ongoing.”

Manager Eddie Howe is without Botman against the home game against Burnley on Saturday, and he likely to remain sidelined for a further period.

Nuno Confirms Paquetá Returns for West Ham

West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá will return to start for the side face Brighton this Sunday, having completed a ban following a red card against Liverpool.

“It is behind us,” Nuno said. “I am positive it won't be repeated as he himself acknowledged his mistake. We spoke internally. I am positive it is over and it will not happen again.”

Nuno also understands the significant pressure on his side, currently in the relegation zone ahead of Saturday's fixtures. “We can't avoid it,” he admitted. “It is a reality. We have to confront it. We're fighting for our top-flight status. We cannot hide it.”

6. Arteta Pleased with Striker Deputy Merino

The Spanish midfielder may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal central striker despite their regular strikers return from injury. Merino has been deployed as an emergency number nine due to fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

He scored Arsenal’s first goal against Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second in a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
